Review: 'The Secret Commonwealth,' By Philip Pullman The latest installment in Pullman's Book of Dust trilogy finds beloved heroine Lyra grown up and troubled, at odds with her daemon Pan and in. This young-adult, modern fantasy—the first in Pullman’s His Dark Materials series—stars a scrappy girl named Lyra who grew up as an orphan looked after by the staff of a fictional college in Oxford, England.

But when her friend Roger is kidnapped by a mysterious group known as the Gobblers, she sets out to save him, a journey that takes her to the Arctic. Clare’s (Ghosts of the Shadow Market, etc.) latest is set in the Shadowhunter world in the 20th century’s first decade (with frequent flashbacks to the previous one).Teenage offspring of the Herondales, Carstairs, Fairchilds, and other angel-descended Nephilim continue their families’ demon-fighting ways amid a round of elegant London balls.

I had the pleasure of buddy-reading this book with Books in the Skye, which was a lot of fun!As to be expected, the book was well-written.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the His Dark Materials series many years. Northern Lights, also known as The Golden Compass, is the first book of the trilogy His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.

It follows the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, a compulsive liar and is set in a world where every human's soul resides in an animal (daemon). The second in the His Dark Materials trilogy, The Subtle Knife is a book that both continues a fantastic story and writes a new one.

It captured my interest from the very first page, although it does take a little time to get going. As always, Pullman brings something fresh to the book and effortlessly continues the series with aplomb and simple ease.

August Pullman is a fifth-grade boy with a severe facial difference. His loving parents and sister have shielded him from many outside influences before WONDER begins; he's been homeschooled up until that point, for example.
